US Masters Trip 2018

Masters Delight For Gareth & Jules!

It was the opportunity of a lifetime. To be able experience the U.S Masters first hand was always going to be an unforgettable experience.

For Gareth Reid and Jules Preston it was exactly that. Currently Full Time students at the s
chool they set off for America on Wednesday 4th with SGH Golf Tours for their six day trip. The trip was to include five nights all inclusive accommodation, three rounds of golf and a hospitality ticket to the fourth and final day of the 82nd Masters Tournament.

They stayed at the 4* Downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel, Columbia described as a lovely hotel with great facilities and very friendly and welcoming staff.  On the Saturday they began their playing on Thursday at Cobblestone Park Golf Club. The following day they then played Woodcreek Private Members Golf Club. It was a shot gun start team event which was described as being great fun working together as a team. On their third and final playing day on the Saturday they played Jonescreek Park Golf Club. The courses were described as excellent with a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. With lots of water hazards and extremely quick greens all three courses provided a great challenge but also provided great rewards.

So then it was time for the Masters! It was the 5th day of the trip and the day everyone had been eagerly awaiting. A hospitality ticket for the final day of the Masters can only be described as golfing heaven and both Gareth and Jules had experienced it. An experience described as overwhelming with a certain wow factor to it and a place where you could feel the history surrounding it along with the sheer perfection of the golf course itself it was most definitely going to leave a lasting impression.

When asked was Augusta National Golf Course what you expected Jules’ immediate response was ‘No. It exceeded my expectations greatly. I expected it to be perfect of course with the perfect fairways and greens but the design of the course along with the undulations and the lush green grass made it picture perfect. The wildlife was amazing also’.

Throughout the day there was plenty to see but so much they didn’t want to miss. They managed to visit every hole on the course apart from the 6th, 16th and the 17th which was a fantastic effort! The most notable players they watched during play were Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed (Champion), Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood. It’s certainly not every day you get to watch world class players. They were treated to many incredible shots throughout the day. However the one that stood out the most and indeed the best shot they witnessed all day was that of Tiger Woods’ on the par three 4th Hole when he struck his iron shot to within 4ft of the hole to make birdie.

Having spent a total of 12 hours at Augusta National Golf Club  there was plenty of other things to experience not only the golf. A huge Professional Shop, the famous food and beverage and of course meeting a few other famous people to go with it. The Pro Shop could only be described as huge accommodating approximately 1000 at one time with a vast array of merchandise on sale. Needless to say there was some time and money spent here! There was then of course the food and beverage. With the famous Egg Salad sandwich only costing $1.50  and a drink $2.00 this represented the uniqueness and the value at the Masters.

Among the most famous people they met was Rick Shiels. Known for his Youtube reviews across the U.K for all the top Golf manufacturers Jules was lucky enough to meet him and get his picture taken whilst having a quick chat.

As the day drew to a close and with more patrons in attendance than ever before that week they managed to get the perfect view by the 18th green to witness the 82nd Masters champion Patrick Reed clinch the winning putt and claim the famous Green Jacket. A memory that will no doubt be ingrained in their minds forever.

A fantastic day throughout and one they certainly will not forget. The most memorable moment relived from Jules, ‘When I walked through the entrance to Augusta National and seen the practice range first hand it really hit me just how amazing this place was’. Gareth’s most memorable moment came watching World No.1 golfer Dustin Johnson hitting driver off the second tee. Gareth described it as ‘an absolute pleasure to see him hit the ball and how far it travels. He said he will never be able to explain the sound the driver makes when he strikes the ball’. Gareth has already informed us that he has already started saving for next year!
